Have you ever looked at an advertisement for a company and said, "What the heck?" Yeah, we have too. Some marketing companies and ad agencies believe you've got to step outside the box and be over-the-top creative to attract the attention of the buyer. The problem with this... you often lose your prospects.
Here's a fact: You are not going to convince someone to buy your product or service if they are not in the market for what you are selling. People don't buy because an advertisement, direct mail piece, web site or brochure is ultra-creative. They buy because they have a need and are looking for someone to fill that need.
Here's how advertising works...
Take newspaper advertising as an example and consider how you read (or should we say skim). Imagine, you are flipping through the pages and suddenly a headline for an article or advertisement catches your eye. The normal reaction is to stop and read the piece slowly.
When it comes to an advertisement, you will stop to read because the advertiser is telling you they can help you solve a problem. If you are looking for mattresses, your eyes and attention will be drawn to the headlines for mattress sales. Whatever it may be, if you are in the market for that product or service, you will notice that headline.
What's in a well-designed advertising campaign?
Any well-designed advertising campaign (or any marketing piece for that matter) will have certain key components. First, it will include a headline that catches the viewer's attention by letting them know you have something that solves a problem for them. Next, it will educate and be focused on the needs of your consumer. Finally, it will have a distinct call to action.
CLIO Awards (the annual awards honoring creative advertising) typically don't do anything for the company that is purchasing the advertising. The ad agency may receive accolades for their creativity, but those awards are not based on the results you realized. We like to be fun and quirky with some of our marketing, but if it doesn't get you results, it's not worth the money you are paying.
The right and consistent message, along with frequency, are what it takes to bring in the business.
