As many business owners and HR experts can attest, attitude is not a substitute for experience nor can it dramatically increase a person's skill level. That's not to say a good attitude isn't important. It is very important, but it can't change the facts if you don't have the skill and experience to back it up.
When it comes to talent or skill, a person can grow only a limited amount. For example, if on a scale of 1 through 10, someone was rated as a 6 in the area of leadership, they may be able to develop into an 8. However, someone who would rate as a 2 in that area, would never be able to get to the level needed to excel, regardless of their attitude.
That's why it's important to have your employees working in areas where they are truly gifted. In doing so, they will be happier and more productive. That's not to say that you shouldn't challenge your employees in areas where they are not comfortable. But, if you notice they are really struggling with something, listen to them to see what can be done to get them spurred on.
Attitude is different. Someone with a poor attitude can always turn that attitude around into one that is winning. If you are working with someone who doesn't appear to have a positive and motivated attitude, sit and talk with them. Perhaps they aren't being challenged or there is an area where they are unhappy.
So what does this all mean? When hiring, you should be looking for someone with a high level of competence and experience as well as a positive attitude. The right combination of all three will make for a winning work relationship. It's also important to build up relationships and encourage our employees once they are working with us. Never forget, it's all about people.
