A report done by Career Systems International and The Jordan Evans Group, called "What Keeps 'Em?," showed some very interesting results on what drives employee engagement and retention. One of the major barriers to building a profitable business venture is the hiring and retention of talented individuals... especially when a small business enterprise is involved. With an unsure economy, it becomes even more difficult.
Employees are leaving employers to take positions with companies that offer more in the way of benefits and challenges. Others, reluctant to risk losing their income, are "checking out" on the job - they are disengaging, becoming less productive, polishing their resumes and biding their time until the economy improves.
According to report cited above, less than one-third of the survey respondents named "Fair Pay" among the reasons for staying with their employer. Instead, the top three retention drivers were:
- Exciting work and challenge.
- Career growth, learning and development.
- Working with great people and relationships.
